I started working with Kubernetes in 2018 (about 3 years ago). In 2019, I successfully migrated a production application into an AWS Elastic Kubernetes Service (EKS) cluster. I’ve been managing that cluster for more than 2 years. All this made me confident that it would be easy for me to pass Certified Kubernetes Administrator (CKA) exam.
Although I was confident with most of the exam topics, I lacked the experience with self-managed clusters. Naturally, I thought I needed to brush up my Kubernetes knowledge.
Certified Kubernetes Administrator course
I bought a course on Udemy and completed it. The course included some practice tests so it has been a great resource to prepare to the CKA exam.
Exam experience
On Linux, the exam software required on Chrome with X windowing system. I was happy to hear I didn’t need to use my Windows laptop.
The length of the exam was 2 hours. Being watched for 2 hours felt a bit weird but as I focussed on the questions I relaxed and forgot about it.
The hardest topic for me was network policies as I had no experience with them. I am not sure what questions I failed on as they don’t provide any details on the exam result.
Final thoughts
Everyone in the industry should definitely consider getting a relevant certification. Preparing for CKA made me study and learn more about Kubernetes features that I never used. It’s certainly great to have some proof of my knowledge.
